We find ourselves in challenging times, with Wiltshire Council being forced to find further savings meaning more cuts in spending on services.
Of course, those services which protect the most vulnerable in our society take priority and most of Wiltshire Council’s money funds Adult Social Care and Children’s Services. This means that gradually other services are being delivered at the minimum standard required or not at all.
You will have noticed that the streets are not so clean, our grass areas are not so tidy, public toilets and play areas are being closed. You may belong to an organisation, working for the community that has had its Wiltshire Council funding reduced or withdrawn, impacting on the social, physical and environmental wellbeing of our town.
We, at Devizes Town and Roundway Parish Councils, have recognised the threat that these cuts in services pose to the quality of life in our town and want to call a halt. We believe the best way to achieve this is together.
In an historic agreement, our two Councils have requested to become one council. This has been agreed by Wiltshire Council and from the 1 April 2017 there will be one council for our town. Our two councils are already working together with the support of Wiltshire Council to deliver improved services, such as grass cutting, weed control, street cleaning, street scene and play areas ensuring that our lovely town remains a lovely town.
Yes, it will cost more money, but we hope that you will agree that the alternative impact on our town would be unthinkable. We hope that we will have your support and that you will work with us as we face the challenges ahead
Earlier in the summer, Wiltshire Council advised that due to budgetary pressures, should a children’s play area become unsafe they would have no alternative other than to close it.
Play areas are an important community facility for our younger residents, therefore their loss in a residential area can have a significant impact both on the children they serve and the community as a whole.
Soon after Wiltshire Council made their announcement, two play areas in the town were closed. Both play areas are well used therefore their closure so concerned the councils of Roundway and Devizes that it was agreed that action needed to be taken to repair them and bring them back into use.
Teaming up, the two Councils were able to share their resources which ensured that both the Brickley Lane and Fruitfields Close play areas were open in time for the school summer holiday.
"I am delighted that we were able to undertake the repairs to these play areas so quickly. Both Devizes and Roundway Parish Council recognise the importance of good quality public services and we will continually strive to maintain them to the best of our ability."
